ABSTRACT

This chapter contextualises the political significance of the new dailies through an analysis of reactions to the rise of this new press from within three political parties: Liberal, Labour, and Conservative. By exploring responses to this new form of mass political communication from people and voices across the Long Edwardian parliamentary spectrum, this chapter highlights the complex impact the new daily press had on many traditional understandings of what a political newspaper press should be, and the assumed merits of speaking to a mass newspaper audience.
