Introduction

This introductory chapter begins to indicate why governance is important in the context of sport. The structure of the book is outlined and the practical emphasis, underpinned by the experience of the authors and research more broadly, is explained. This chapter also identifies three important themes (diversity/inclusion, communication, and change) that run through the book to provide some depth in our understanding of what governance is and how to do it in sport organizations. Taking a practical approach and explaining the unique aspects of sport governance that drive us to do this, this chapter sets the scene for the remaining chapters and provides an introduction to the key questions about sport governance that this book herewith addresses.
