ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the notion of “modes” of sport governance is introduced to show that sport boards should operate on different “levels” of thinking or focus – the fiduciary mode, the strategic mode, and the more advanced, generative mode. These modes expand our thinking of what sport boards can achieve in sport organizations, and how they can work toward effectiveness, transparency, and efficiency in an ethical and responsible manner. While Chapter 3 focused on different ways of seeing board dynamics, this chapter focuses on the board as a “collective,” suggesting there are different responsibilities of the group as well as individual's capacities and areas of expertise.
