ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the program’s distinctive characteristics and the group populations served. These are: jail inmates, individuals in drug rehabilitation centers, the frail elderly in nursing homes and adult day-care centers, hospitalized and outpatient psychiatric patients, hospitalized veterans, youth in need residing in child-care facilities, children in domestic violence shelters, youth of the low-income housing projects and the physically and intellectually challenged. Begun at Ramapo College of New Jersey 49 years ago and on-going, the program has dual objectives: to provide the freedom of expression inherent in creative art to youth and adults for whom freedom in one aspect or another is compromised, and to provide student presenters with the cultural awareness of people and situations they might never otherwise encounter.
