ABSTRACT
This chapter helps composers plan musical scores for silent film. It examines planning themes, choice of ensemble, and aesthetic and compositional choices. It covers dividing duties among players. It looks at dramatic timing in music for film: leading, coinciding with, or following onscreen action, and the effects of each. It considers musical opportunities in creating environmental effects, adding depth to emotional readings, and other cinematic situations.
