ABSTRACT

The third chapter analyses the shift in Congress Dominance in the era of coalition politics starting from 1989 through the decades of 1990s. The chapter analyses the shifts in the party system due to the mandalization of politics, new economic reforms, and globalization. The chapter also looks at how Congress dealt with its changed status from the pre-dominant party to existing in a multi-party system with coalition governments. The chapter concludes with an analysis of the emergent challenges to the Congress party—the rise of Sangh, Left Politics, and crisis in leadership.
