ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the illusiveness of the concept of strategy or grand strategy. Strategies and grand strategies are calculations that include and entail both objectives and nonobjective dimensions. They are overt and covert. They are multifaceted, involving a variety of factors that the author has identified as constitutive elements of a grand strategy. In this chapter, the author establishes these constitutive elements that help to determine whether a grand strategy was in action. The chapter also establishes how their complexity contributes to the diffuseness of the notion of grand strategies, but at the same time, provides an insight on how to spot a grand strategy in action.
