ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the second constitutive element of grand strategic pursuits, namely, time and space. Every strategy unfolds in a given theater, which constitutes the space factor. A grand strategy also unfolds in a specific time frame, which constitutes the time factor. The complexity of its objectives has led China to expand its theater of operations in all regions of the globe in the specific epochal context of today. The chapter, therefore, expands on the relevance of these two factors, as they help explain both the opportunities and challenges of achieving grand strategic objectives. This chapter addresses how the awareness of time and space shapes the identification and execution of strategic pursuits, and here in particular of China’s grand strategic pursuits.
