ABSTRACT

Choice is a type of agency in which people have the opportunity of selecting one course of action from various available options. The act of choice allows humans to be agents in the world through analysing different options to achieve the same goal, regardless of whether that goal is conscious or unconscious. In urban design, choice is the availability of different options at multiple scales. These options could range from available paths for movement, different opportunities of visual interest and vista, various events and activities, diverse patterns of mobility, and options of transportation infrastructure. Choice can be found in the specific local quality of a space that characterises available connections and accessibility. Urban design policies and implementation often generates, controls, and protects certain choices through zoning codes or private covenants. These mandated policies allow or restrict certain types of uses, which has social and economic implications on choices for different demographic groups.
