ABSTRACT

The introduction starts with an explanation of how the author became interested in Japanese whaling when she came across an article that accused Japan of “defying the world” and continuing its research on whaling programs. As Japan is often seen as an environmentally conscious country, the article contradicted this image and sparked curiosity. A brief overview of how the modern-day anti-whaling and pro-sustainable whaling debate developed is presented next with a focus on Japan and its history of involvement in the global whaling regime. The main research questions guiding this research project are introduced, followed by an outline of the research methodology that was chosen to help answer these questions. A part on the organization of the book with the titles of chapters and a brief description of their content concludes the introduction.
