ABSTRACT

This chapter lays the theoretical foundations of the book. It discusses the current challenges of using the correct theories and concepts to understand our ever-changing society and refers to them as zombie categories. It then revises the classical understanding of secularism and modernity to adapt them to our current social and cultural setting by adopting the terms post-secularism and multiple modernities. It then starts to discuss Australia’s specific style of modernity in relation to religion and its de-secularisation processes, which will continue to feature throughout the rest of the book.
