ABSTRACT
The men, women, and children who lived in Britain and Ireland 500 years ago lived in a world which is lost to us. The difference is a matter not only of the material circumstances of their lives but of their mental worlds and their imaginations. We cannot understand the religion, politics, and society of the sixteenth century unless we understand this.
