ABSTRACT

The first part of this chapter will consider acquisitive crimes that typically appear at the start of the adolescent offending journey, namely, theft and shoplifting. Handling stolen goods and drug dealing to fund a habit can signal vulnerability to criminal exploitation, and for some young people can be precursors to involvement in higher level drug dealing and organized crime. The chapter will also pay particular attention to burglary, which was found to be an indicator of increased criminogenic risk and criminal training. The chapter will also consider the social rewards of acquisitive crimes and the exploitation of young people by experienced criminals for financial gain. Finally, it will consider robbery as an offense that is often committed by groups.
