ABSTRACT

This chapter asks: how can the logic of the media be decelerated (“slow media”) in order to advance debate and the public sphere in the age of digital authoritarianism, fake news, and filter bubbles?

The rise of authoritarian capitalism has been supported by the capitalist media's logic of tabloidisation and acceleration. This chapter discusses how decelerating and decommercialising the media could help overcome the culture of fake news, filter bubbles, and fragmented publics that have helped advance authoritarianism.
