ABSTRACT

This chapter enters the JNF photographic archive in Jerusalem: the prime site that narrated the Zionist body and articulated Palestine as the land of Zion, and shaped their connection and global image. It is here, under the auspices of the Propaganda and Journalism Division, that the Zionist body was typified as that of a pioneer (or halutz), a hero that redeemed the abandoned land of Zion from millennia of neglect. This archive created an effective mechanism for the production of this image, the writing of a national imaginary and the distribution of this image for fundraising purposes. This chapter brings the reader into the archive, suggesting ways to generate power in this archival machinery and observing it in its most productive moments, as well as its long-lasting impact on the civil landscapes to this day.
