ABSTRACT

Not only can the taxi represent a significant part of the transport network in most cities but the mere presence of a distinct vehicle has also contributed to a wide cannon of cultural references, themes, and images. The vehicle can appear iconic, of common appearance, at least within the boundaries of its city, and immediately recognisable, almost regardless of the actual location. In this chapter, we explore the origins of the vehicle and why its size, shape, and even its colour make it what it is. Why do songs serenade its appearance, why does the vehicle appear so often in film and TV, and why on earth is yellow its most lasting colour? By reviewing the actions of individuals, the camaraderie of the trade, and the expectation of the public, the chapter defines the core elements of a cultural identity and its importance to a taxi.
