ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the three core notions of learning – developing child’s skills, will, and thrill in learning. It outlines the importance of listening to and developing child’s voice and how they react to situations, failure, and success. The chapter outlines the various attributes of the child that lead to each unique voice. There are three major key learning skills, which are often couched in new jargon such as ‘executive functioning’, which helps children power their self-regulation. A powerful way to help children develop the three components of executive functioning (skills of inhibition, shifting, monitoring and updating) is to think and talk to their children in terms of what success looks like. Success requires a gradual release of responsibility by the parent to allow the child to complete the task. The parent should also, during and after completion, attribute the success or failure to the child’s actions.
