ABSTRACT

In Chicago, where Sullivan studied medicine before the First World War, 9 million immigrants had arrived since the beginning of the century. It was there that he met the researchers of the Chicago School of Sociology, and Jane Addams 1 who founded Hull House in 1899, a beautiful house in the middle of a slum, offering refuge to immigrant women and their babies, and a place to school their children. When she died in 1935, a huge crowd followed her coffin in the streets.
