ABSTRACT

Due to the transformative nature of this study, and with the author’s previous experiences that dialogue alone was not enough for marginalised groups to move beyond the status quo, space was created for an additional and complementary methodology for data collection. This is the first of three chapters giving a voice to the participants. This chapter highlights the findings and discussions following the data collection process and relates to Marxist and Bourdieusian theories. This chapter posits reflections from childhood and adulthood that highlight the general transmission of social class. It is here where an explanation is given for the home backgrounds and the lived social inequalities of each of the participants.

The aim of this chapter is to provide a discussion of what it means to be working class, poor and disadvantaged. It does so by highlighting social structures as limiting or closed off to those with low levels of capital and how habitus becomes deeply engrained and detrimental for the effective development of agency.
