ABSTRACT

With regard to the times of the Greco-Bactrian kingdom, the preserved sources indicate a rather strong and influential Greek culture. Ai Khanoum revealed many traces of Greek architecture, art, and literature, which may indicate a desire by the Greeks living there to create a living lieu de memoire, a site of memory for the founders and inhabitants of this city, who thus tried to preserve the memory of Greece. While the credibility of the information provided by Bardaisan seems to be supported by the Indian sources. The relationship of the Greeks with the expansion of Buddhism could have been closer than is currently assumed on the basis of the lack of archaeological data from the Indo-Greek period. It would be helpful to create a chart imaging the development of Buddhist art. The practical side of this development and the exact character of the Greek involvement should also be taken into account.
