ABSTRACT

Early in October Berryman moved into what he called ‘the best working apartment I’ve had in years’ at 2509 Humboldt Avenue South, three blocks from the Tates’ and within a stone’s throw of the Lake of the Isles. He took exercise by walking round the lake every day, a distance of about three miles; when winter gripped he walked across the ice. For the first weeks he was anxious as to whether the university could provide him with employment, but meanwhile he wrote off many letters to distant friends, mostly women, reassuring them that he had found new life in Minneapolis: ‘I quit drinking by the way several weeks ago,’ he told Anita Phillips on 15 December, for example, ‘and am v. busy & high-spirited.’
