Elated by what he thought was his redemption from alcohol achieved at Hazelden, Berryman ended 1969 in hopes that the tide would run and run. ‘I am extremely happy,’ he reported to his friends,
working very hard on Hamlet for a course on it I’m giving this winter for the English Dept. But I’m nearly done and am branching out back into comprehensive biographical & critical Shakespearian studies. A few months ought to see my biography at 500–600 pages, when I’ll cut it back to some 450 and give it to my amazed & delighted publisher.
