ABSTRACT

This chapter sets the stage for developing a psychoanalytic political philosophy by relying, in part, on psychoanalytic developmental perspectives in conversation with political philosophers. The premise here is that developmental theories are anthropological in nature and, as such, are linked, in part, to the polis. Put another way, psychoanalytic anthropologies can be utilized, with some caveats, in constructing a political philosophy for the Anthropocene Age. In placing developmental perspectives in conversation with political theories, this chapter depicts the development of political selves and identifies several environmentally destructive illusions that have accompanied the development of political selves in the West.
