ABSTRACT

The notion of sovereignty is a central concept in Western political philosophies and questions of dwelling. Thus, it is incumbent that a psychoanalytic political philosophy concerned about our climate emergency take it up. This chapter offers psychoanalytic considerations as to the unconscious features of sovereignty and how it shapes subjectivity. In addition, I return to a psychoanalytic developmental perspective, arguing that human dwelling rests on anarchic foundations. Given this, it is important to begin by providing some background on the notion of sovereignty and identify its attributes. Included in this section is an explanation and discussion of the relation between sovereignty and political violence, which is a foundational aspect of ecological degradation. Once this foundation is proffered, I move to psychoanalytic considerations.
