ABSTRACT

Students who attend university as distance learners are prone to distractions from their studies. Traditional studies on campus are also disrupted with a variety of distractions. However, as this chapter demonstrates, online-only students have more distractions. These students are working almost entirely online, so they get distracted by a wide variety of digital systems and websites. Furthermore, most online students are likely to live at home, where they will get distracted by family and friends. It is therefore essential for online students to minimise distractions if they are to study effectively. Many distractions occur because students do not have routines. As this chapter shows, establishing routines is fundamental to ensuring online distractions are minimised. Good time management is also vital in removing as many online distractions as possible. Time blocking is one technique of time management that can minimise distractions. Another effective method is the Pomodoro Technique ® which breaks up time into 25-minute focused blocks. These systems of time management help, but students also need to consider the use of distraction-blocking apps to reduce unwanted interruptions that distract. This chapter also provides ideas on other means of removing distractions such as the use of background music and signs on the study room door.
