ABSTRACT

Biodance - the endless exchange of the elements of living things with the earth itself - proceeds silently, giving us no hint that it is happening. To put it briefly, the Western/industrial world-view was based on certainty, predictability, control and rationality, all outgrowths of modern science and its necessary concomitant, scientific materialism. The chapter argues that global consciousness is a factor in die new world-view. Higher awareness, critical thinking and foresight are themselves interwoven with, and supportive of, global sensibility. In 1988 the United Nations published the Brundtland Report titled Our Common Future. It was the result of the deliberations of a panel of international experts chaired by the prime minister of Norway and convened as the World Commission on the Environment and Development. The report attempts to outline an achievable strategy to restore balance to the life of the planet. It says that although the Commissioners came from twenty-one different countries, they were able to agree about the plan.
