ABSTRACT

Whether we examine human behaviour, new technologies or products, they are all part of a larger context, operating as part of one or more systems. This chapter is a deep dive on systems design and incorporates the insights of German sociologist Niklas Luhmann to understand the functions and logics of our systems. It also questions the ultimate logic: our scientific paradigm. Thus, emphasising the need for a fundamental shift towards understanding that our actions have consequences for the planet, which in return affect our abilities to thrive on the planet. Instead, a new logic is proposed, guided by the simple question of whether our actions are creating improvement for people while staying within our planetary boundaries? By doing so, we pave the way to reclaiming power and designing our systems towards the world we want. Similar to previous scientific revolutions, which have enhanced prosperity for society and individual citizens in a way not even imaginable in the old paradigm, this chapter highlights how we might reimagine and ultimately move towards a better world. It encourages you to envision the world you wish to move toward. It concludes with an interview with Niccolaj Reffstrup, the co-founder of GANNI.
