ABSTRACT

A qualitative strategy that has grown in popularity in recent years is environmental discourse analysis. This chapter defines what is meant by environmental discourse analysis, provides three extended illustrations of environmental discourse analysis, discusses the rationale for doing this kind of analysis, and describes various things to consider when undertaking such an analysis. The field of discourse analysis has arisen as a systematic way of studying discourse and the role that it plays in society. Flame-retardant chemicals have been used for years in things like building materials, carpets, and mattresses in order to reduce the risk of fire. In the 1990s, people became increasingly aware of potential health risks associated with its use, and several states considered banning its manufacture and use.
