ABSTRACT

The police killing of another Black man, George Floyd, in Minneapolis in the spring of 2020, triggered an unprecedented global protest against systemic racism. Demonstrators marched in major cities in Europe, North America, Australia, parts of Africa, and beyond. Virtually every industry was targeted for its complicity in discrimination, including news media. Racialized and Indigenous journalists used social media as well as a variety of mainstream platforms to call out their own industry for racist and discriminatory content and working conditions. This chapter traces the racial reckoning as it grew in influence, examining its impact on news organization in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
