ABSTRACT

When pressed for action by racialized and Indigenous journalists during the racial reckoning, news organizations reacted with a range of short- and long-term responses. This chapter analyzes those responses and puts them into two categories, one based on measures to address harmful news content, the other on working conditions, though it is important to note that some initiatives were intended to address both content and workplace issues. The analysis demonstrates the broad scope of responses from the news industry to critical issues in its practices, and the degree to which some news organizations are much more committed to reform than others.
