ABSTRACT

Research and direct experience clearly indicate that people-centered housing recovery works best. Accordingly, this chapter embraces best practices for working with people to recover lost housing in a manner suitable to local climate, livelihoods, family structure, and people’s specified needs. Related discussion will explain options for sheltering, temporary housing, and permanent housing post-disaster in a range of nations and with an eye to building resilience to future disasters. Equity issues in regaining housing will be addressed. People-centered housing will be emphasized, including examples of how public participation has happened in several disasters.
