ABSTRACT

Case management has been used for decades within the human services sector and is now considered a best practice in disaster human services, specifically during recovery. The coordination of various services including health and mental health, housing, access to services, transportation, opening of schools, employment, and housing represent primary activities within disaster recovery case management. Often falling under disaster human services, case managers work in both public and private sectors ensuring individuals, families, and communities can recover from disasters. Disaster recovery case managers play a pivotal role in the coordination of services and helping people get back on their feet. Increasingly, case management is being integrated into recovery planning and response, disaster frameworks, and standard operating procedures.
