ABSTRACT
President Donald Trump has cancelled several international agreements that his predecessor had signed. In South Asia, where domestic politics plays so much of a role in foreign policy, such possibilities are even more. A burning north-east is no good news for Bangladesh, particularly because of its emotive content. It is naive to think that a religion-laden socio-political controversy in one part of South Asia can be quarantined within its locale for a long time. Migration is a complex phenomenon which only oppressive dictatorships can tackle, for their means are inhuman. Human history is replete with migratory movements and though it is politically fashionable these days to denounce immigrants, particularly if they are Muslims, as can also be seen in many parts of Europe, the end result is bound to be naught. The middle-class Indians who ridicule Bangladeshi immigrants must look to their own hankering for American green cards, if not American citizenship.
