ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the significance of social emotional learning (SEL) in terms of its impact on enhancing student performance, motivation, self-worth, peer relationships, as well as enhances self-regulation so that students are able to demonstrate self-restraint in regard to their behaviors and choices. The chapter addresses the way in which SEL influences student achievement, both academically and personally/socially. This chapter also stresses the importance for students to demonstrate empathy and compassion, as these two qualities help to facilitate relationship building and reduce friction and volatility between people. This chapter also integrates ways to integrate SEL into the school counseling curricula. Moreover, this chapter addresses the direct correlation between SEL and college and career readiness, in that students’ who possess core SEL skills and competencies are more prepared and equipped to excel in their post-secondary endeavors since they are better able to manage time, communicate, collaborate, take initiative, problem-solve, appreciate diversity, and work to promote positive change. In addition, this chapter also addresses SEL and its impact on mental health and wellness. This is very important especially due to the chaos and upheaval due to the pandemic and society at large. SEL competencies can assist those struggling with mental health issues, such as coping skills, communication, and optimism play a vital role in wellness physically, cognitively, and psychologically.
