ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the social emotional learning competency: self-awareness. Self-awareness includes the way one sees oneself, as well as the recognition of how one's behaviors impact others. Self-awareness encompasses being mindful of values, beliefs, ideologies, strengths, as well as identifying areas that necessitate growth. The focus is on one's actions and the impact of actions on others, which is essential in regard to creating a safe school climate. This chapter is composed of a variety of activities for the secondary and elementary school settings that can be conducted in the classroom, small group, or individual counseling in order to amplify this core competency.
