ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the social emotional learning competency: Self-management. Self-management includes one's ability to regulate emotions, being proactive rather than reactive, and demonstrating self-control and willpower. Self-management is a critical skill for students to possess, as this skill enables them to control impulses and to think about the consequences of an action before carrying this action out. The focus is on self-restraint and impulse control, which are vital for creating safe school climates. This chapter is composed of a variety of activities for the secondary and elementary school settings that can be conducted in the classroom, small group, or individual counseling in order to amplify this core competency.
