ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the social emotional learning competency: social awareness. Social awareness is one's ability to empathize with others, as well as engage in perspective sharing. Social Awareness includes respecting differences and remaining open-minded even if viewpoints are not the same. Social awareness is an essential skill to possess, as this fosters respect, identifying and recognizing similarities and differences, as well as promotes pro-social behavior, which is imperative for creating safe school climates. This chapter is composed of a variety of activities for the secondary and elementary school settings that can be conducted in the classroom, small group, or individual counseling in order to amplify this core competency.
