ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the social emotional learning competency: responsible decision-making. Responsible decision-making refers to making healthy choices that are constructive and promote positive outcomes for oneself and others. Responsible decision-making involves decision-making, taking responsibility, compromise, reflection, morality, assertiveness, as well as making healthy choices regarding actions and behaviors. Responsible decision-making skills are important for students to possess, as this helps to augment feelings of autonomy, responsibility, empathy, compassion, consideration of self and others, validation, accountability, and empowerment, which play a central role in creating safe school climates.
