ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of bullying including bullying statistics and effects of bullying. Bullying is one of the leading causes of school violence and therefore school counselors need to work intentionally to address and mitigate bullying in their school settings. Bullying is one of the most prevalent challenges taking place in schools worldwide. Ramifications of bullying include lower GPA, decreased academic performance, and self-esteem, as well as an increase in destructive behaviors including distress emotionally and psychologically, self-harm, substance usage, delinquency, suicidal or homicidal ideations, and violence. Due to its pervasiveness, it is essential for school counselors to implement antibullying programs in order to create school climates that are empathic, culturally responsive, compassionate, and promote unity.
