ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of cyberbullying including cyberbullying statistics and the long-lasting effects of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a form of bullying that takes place through technology. Due to the accessibility, anonymity, and availability of technology, cyberbullying sadly has become more commonplace. A substantial number of students have been victims of cyberbullying and have experienced cruel and hurtful information being disseminated about them via technology. Cyberbullying also has dire effects on students’ overall well-being and can lead to students feeling isolated and unsafe in the school setting. Students who experience cyberbullying experience a decrease in their academic performance and their interpersonal relationships and self-worth also suffer. Students who may experience relentless cyberbullying, lack healthy coping skills, and do not feel a sense of support, may be more at risk for demonstrating volatility.
