ABSTRACT

The ancient Greeks, who forged intellectual weapons for all to use and were indeed the first scientists, were they alive to-day, would embrace enthusiastically the science that has so extended their thought and philosophy. Science is undoubtedly important for what it has done and it will be impossible in subsequent chapters to avoid references to its technological achievements which both provide illustrations of its power and constitute, because of their repercussions upon both the individual and the community, one reason why people must appreciate the deeper significance of science and learn to use it to the full extent of its value. Sciences, in fact, differ only in the technique of observation. The former, whether he be fitter, carpenter or electrician, learns during his apprenticeship to use the tools of his trade and to become a competent workman able to take a job and carry it through to completion.
