ABSTRACT

All is brought together here, teaching students to use the essay body to formulate an introduction (PREP) and conclusion (PS). This chapter reiterates the point that what looks natural on paper is not necessarily written in a natural and sequential way, showing how introductions and conclusions are much easier to write once you’ve written your essay body. Again, your students follow a series of questions to formulate introductions and conclusions using what they’ve already written. The reader can see an essay formulated in its entirety using the scaffolded schemas before it’s presented with the scaffolds removed. The chapter concludes with a section on exams, explaining how learning the schemas and strategies off-by-heart can assist planning and writing essays under timed exam conditions. There is a strategy on how to make the most of the blank page in exam booklets to plan, aid memory, and maintain focus, with example graphics showing what this could look like.
