ABSTRACT

The Introduction poses the questions, “What is ‘weights and measures?’” and “What exactly do weights and measures inspectors do?” The answers explain how and why inspectors regulate weights and measures. The Introduction summarizes some of the special features of the book including: (1) A 2019 survey of state weights and measures regulation in the United States conducted by the author especially for this book [Chapter 1]; (2) An introduction to the economics of weights and measures regulation [Chapter 2]; (3) A case history of weights and measures regulation in Seattle, Washington [Chapter 3]; (4) A detailed study of the important 1997 gasoline fraud case in Los Angeles County [Chapter 5]; and (5) landmark legal cases addressing ‘net contents’ [Chapter 6].
