ABSTRACT

The vital topic of effective writing for the ear is explored in this chapter. It follows with guidance in how to best use language to connect with your audience. Consideration is given to how to best keep the voice healthy, and strategies for managing nerves that might affect vocal performance. As you create audio for your first audience, this chapter urges the reader to identify its main characteristics. How similar are your hearers likely to be to your own age and shared values? Each culture has their own systems of communication and ways of expressing meaning. Your audience listens and responds to your work through their culture and value system. There are three R.E.A.L. exercises that focus on the discoverer stage of audio production. This chapter starts and ends with personal case studies of a Belgian journalist who created radio stories from Africa, and a radio broadcaster in Hong Kong who used his voice to bring crucial information to his listeners in times of crisis, stories of people who regularly created important radio content for audiences.
