Originally written to frame a double special issue of Poetics Today, this excerpted essay provides both historical background and a genealogy of terms and schools of thought relevant to narrative and the emotions. When literary critics and theorists engage with colleagues in other disciplines, the effort to communicate successfully over disciplinary boundaries demands clarity about terminology, premises, and approaches.
