ABSTRACT
This excerpted essay discusses the debates and challenges of empathy’s interdisciplinary research context for a literary theoretical audience. Students of literature are more likely to be familiar with affect studies than with theorizing that emerges from engagement with emotion science: this essay redresses that imbalance.
