ABSTRACT
The result of an internalizing process, le visage de la mère (the face of the mother) is proposed as a healthy alternative to repudiated signifiers of femininity. An important distinction is drawn between inhibited passivity and disciplined receptivity, the latter being the eternal signifier of the feminine.
