ABSTRACT

The book concludes by reflecting on the ongoing pandemic in India and how it intersects with the future of work. The transformation of work due to digital technologies has been continuing apace for some time now. The pandemic could be a transformational moment in terms of precipitating these new work arrangements. It could also be a lesson in the need to address socio-economic inequalities, and through this safeguard lives and livelihoods. These varied scenarios make it important to inquire into how work within the rapidly urbanizing context of India will incorporate new digital technologies, and whether these new technologies will be turned towards the needs of all segments of the population or utilized to serve the interests of a few well-connected social classes.
