ABSTRACT

Depending on the jurisdictions, where the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) protocol is being used, it may be legally necessary to give the child other information or other instructions such as that s/he may be accompanied by a trusted person or that there may be another person in the room with the interviewer. Additionally, in the revised NICHD protocol, the interviewer also discusses something pleasant that happened to the child as well as something unpleasant. Episodic memory training is a crucial portion of the NICHD protocol and of the pre-substantive phase, which cannot be skipped if one wishes to obtain all the benefits of using the NICHD protocol. The revised version of the NICHD protocol offers the interviewer several options to support the child and deal with his/her reluctance; the nature of this non-suggestive support varies depending on the dynamics of the interview.
