ABSTRACT

Outcomes are an integral part of how organizations measure progress and success. This chapter explores the tendency for organizations to either create a competitive culture around outcomes or to create a more collaborative/team approach to attaining outcomes. What are the pitfalls of competition and collaboration? How can they impact motivation? What does healthy competition look like? And, what’s the difference between collaboration and cooperation? Honoring both competition and collaboration elevates an organization by healthfully acknowledging that team members can be differentially motivated. Using the chapter vignette as a case example, the 5-step process outlined in Chapter 1 focuses on a robust goal setting process that includes values, performance psychology strategies, and cultural assessment. These goal-setting components provide multiple pathways for successful performance and lead to more sustainable motivation.
